According to statistics, the average person attempts to lose weight at least four times a year. But only 1 out of every 100 people lose weight for good and can proudly share their weight loss success stories.
Therefore it’s important you know about these secrets before starting your battle with weight loss:
1. Be consistent
It’s always very difficult to start a diet that promotes eating only fruits and vegetables if you’re used to eating mainly fast food. It’s a huge stress for your body, and it will react accordingly. Try not to demand too much of yourself at once, and make progressive changes instead.
2. Keep track of your progress
Believe it or not, it is very important to carefully monitor your progress. This will give you a real picture of how much weight you’ve lost. In many cases, you’ll have to wait months until you see some noticeable changes in your body, so in order not to lose motivation, keep a record of all the changes.
3. Be physically active
A healthy diet plan does help you lose weight, but it’s very important to combine good nutrition with some kind of physical exercise. Even low-risk activities, such as walking (if performed on a daily basis) will be very helpful.
4. Look for support from your friends and family
The moral support of those around you is extremely important when you’re on a diet. They know that when you do give in to temptation, you’ll feel guilty afterward, so they can remind you to be careful with high-calorie foods when they are with you. It’s their way of supporting you in your battle.
5. Determine your metabolic type
If you feel like you’re doing everything to lose weight but still have no noticeable results, it’s okay. Actually, it’s a very common problem. But before giving up, learn more about your metabolism. If you have a slow metabolism, arm yourself with patience, and don’t let your guard down. Remember that long-term results will become visible one day.
You can speed up your metabolism with regular water intake and specific vegetables and fruits.
6. Any diet requires supervision
If you decided to start a diet, think about contacting a good nutritionist for supervision and advice. Remember: with all those “miracle diets” that promise to burn kilograms of fat in no time at all, you’re running a serious risk of harming your health. Low-calorie diet plans lack essential nutrients for the proper functioning of your body, so they will have a negative effect on your mental and physical wellbeing.
Now you’re ready to embark on your weight loss journey. Good luck!

CNN’s African Voices Changemakers meets ‘Safari Doctors’ founder Umra Omar
CNN’s African Voices Changemakers meets ‘Safari Doctors’ founder Umra Omar
On this week’s African Voices Changemakers, CNN International’s Arit Okpo meets Umra Omar, an award-winning social entrepreneur, community leader, and the founder of Safari Doctors, a mobile medical clinic serving underprivileged communities in Kenya.
Omar and the Safari Doctors travel by boat, road and air to bring medical care to people living along a remote area of islands, the Lamu Archipelago, near the Kenyan-Somali border. She speaks about how the organisation has grown from humble beginnings, “When we first started it was mainly about getting immunisations out to rural areas and making sure that a woman who wanted access to family planning could get it. So just providing that primary care of your cough syrups, your pain medication, and then advancing from going to about a hundred people a month to now up to like 2,500 people every month.”
Their work has been internationally recognised, with Omar winning the UN-Kenya Person of the Year Award in 2017, and also being named a Top 10 CNN Hero in 2016. She describes how the company went from serving one village to an award-winning mission covering twenty-four villages, “It started as a ‘by the way’ and it ended up being a full-time and full-blown entity. We ended with a CNN Heroes Award which kind of put that strong stamp of accreditation on the work that we’re doing. And kept us going financially, network wise, and really amplifying the voices of change coming from the ground going up.”
Having started with the distribution of vaccines and other medical services using dhows and motorbikes, the Safari Doctors initiative has expanded to a network currently using its own speed boat and medical vehicle, and offering improved facilities including veterinary services. Omar talks about their future expansion, “The idea now is expanding to preventative health. So, we train a cohort of community health workers, especially the youth, to address issues around population health, environment awareness, and getting it into that model of mobile primary and preventative healthcare that comes to the last mile doorsteps of the communities in need.”
Omar is full of praise for the Safari Doctors team and she explains how young people form the centre of this group, “We cover the whole of Lamu County with a team that is out of this world, absolutely mind-blowing, young, energetic. Actually, out of a staff of 12, I’m the second oldest staff member. I look around and I’m like, Safari Doctors is run by people under 35 and a lot of them actually under 20.”
This network has also been instrumental in disseminating information on COVID-19 and tracking possible causes in the communities they serve. Omar details their work during the pandemic, “What the pandemic did, it really solidified our outreaches. It was us really putting a face to the pandemic when we went out to the community, from issues around social distancing, handwashing and getting the communities to see that, okay, this is not something that’s just happening in the city. These are the precautions that we need to take on the ground as well.”
Omar and her team remain passionate about helping their communities. She sums up the Safari Doctors’ goal, “It’s a peaceful change opportunity and tapping into I would say an underrated resource which is human power. It’s a beautiful feeling to work at home with my people especially the younger people and play our part in transforming our own communities and actually feeling like you’re making a difference.”

How To Make A Digital Vision Board
Some call it a vision board, others a motivation board, all in all, they both have the same meaning. A vision/motivation board is a place where you comprise images, quotes, scriptures, or any other motivating elements that captivate the vision you have for yourself. A digital vision board is a collection of images and texts that you can take with you anywhere you go. It also takes less time to create than a physical vision board.
Vision boards have always fascinated me. The only problem is that I’m too lazy to make a physical one. Getting pictures from old magazines, cutting them up and sticking them on A4 boards has always felt like a lot of work. Well, at least for me. I came across a digital one on Pinterest and immediately decided to learn how to make one. It actually turned out to be super easy than I expected.
Without further ado, let’s dive into the steps that you’re going to take in order to come up with the perfect digital vision board.
Figure Out What You Want To Manifest.
The initial step is to ask yourself what you want to invite into your life, and once you’re sure of what you want the board to be about, you can begin thinking about what will go on it. I, for instance, wanted my vision board to entail financial growth, intentional friendships among other things
Choose An App/Website.
The vision board I saw on Pinterest was made on Canva so I decided to use the same for mine. It’s easy to use and has a variety of board layouts.
Find Content For The Board.
You will pull images and words from the Internet and assemble them digitally. Choose images and quotes that align with your vision. You can also add text with different fonts to make it artsier.
Arrange The Board.
Once you’ve gathered all the content on your desktop, start arranging the board. The trick is to take your time and have fun while at it. The process of making the vision board will help you to plan your goals and intentions in your head and send them out to the universe. Once you’re done, download it and set it as your phone wallpaper or computer background.
Remember, however small, please ensure that you do something every day that will push you towards the goals you’ve put on your board.
That’s all folks!
