Lifebuoy: Touching lives by lending a hand to promote hand washing

Since 2010, Lifebuoy has reached more than 426 million women and children across Asia, Africa and Latin America to teach them healthy hand washing habits.

Published

on

On Monday 15th October, the Global Handwashing Day went down worldwide. Aiming to encourage the spirit of hand washing – something which Kenyans perform poorly at, – the campaign, under #High5ForHandwashing led by Lifebuoy soap trended top in the country for the better part of the day.

Global hand washing day is marked every year on 15th October to raise awareness of the importance of hand washing with soap in reducing child mortality. And the statistics point to a saddening tale. More than 1.4 million children die within the first 28 days of birth. That is 50,000 children every day, 2,084 kids every hour, 34 children every minute. By the time you are done reading this sentence, 12 children will be dead already.

What’s the dirtiest item you’ve touched today? Door handles? Menus? Keyboards? Handbags? Money. Phones. Especially your phone. These items are our most used daily, the ones we touch daily, and not surprisingly, the dirtiest as well. You are probably looking at your phone right now and saying – ‘But no one touches my phone.” No one, but germs. They are everywhere. Just because you can’t see them doesn’t mean they ain’t there.

That is why Lifebuoy, a product of Unilever Company, the global FMCG (fast Moving Consumer Goods, I bet you didn’t know that. We Googled it too.) decided to come up with an ubiquitous way to promote hand washing in Kenya. Memes.
Yes, that’s right. Memes.

Kenyans are known for their sense of humor and the memes spread like a bad rumor on a lazy Monday. From educating the populace on how to wash hands, through informing the key occasions on washing hands, the future of this nation lies in our hands. Literally and figuratively.

Since 2010, Lifebuoy has reached more than 426 million women and children across Asia, Africa and Latin America to teach them healthy hand washing habits.n It may seem like a most minute topic, but washing your hands with soap and water can save lives. Through the School of Five program, Lifebuoy was able to reach at least 400,000 children in 2017 alone.

How many times have you seen this? A guy comes from work, pays the conductor. Fist bumps the soldier, supports himself on a pole while crossing a tunnel, and passes by his local mutura den for one round. All this while, the only drop of water his hands have touched is him wiping away the tears caused by the blazing sun.
His excuse?

“Ukieka pilipili mambo iko sawa! Hii inaua kila kitu!”

Pepper is the new cool for washing hands.

You may not think you are doing much, but just the simple act of washing your hands before meals, after visiting the toilet and before handling children may inspire the revolution. It’s the last straw on the camel’s back. It’s the safety pin on the grenade. It’s the icing on the cake. It’s the foundation stone in building Rome.

Already washed your hands? Good. Now take it a step further and buy lifebuoy soap, and for every soap sold, Lifebuoy commits to teaching kids about washing hands. Sounds fair?

It’s the little things in life that count. Did you know that Kenya ranked 46 out of 195 countries in 2014 for the highest under-five mortality rates.

It doesn’t take much to reverse the trend. It is the little things that matter. Joining the #High5ForHandwashing campaign is your simple way of advocating for greater use of simple yet cost-effective hygiene interventions like hand-washing with soap.

By the time you are done reading this article, 94 children will have died due to factors related with hand hygiene. You can do something about it by washing your hands using soap and water. You can even add gloss on the print and save 5 children just by using Lifebuoy soap.
Their life is in your hands.

How To Make A Digital Vision Board

Published

on

Some call it a vision board, others a motivation board, all in all, they both have the same meaning. A vision/motivation board is a place where you comprise images, quotes, scriptures, or any other motivating elements that captivate the vision you have for yourself. A digital vision board is a collection of images and texts that you can take with you anywhere you go. It also takes less time to create than a physical vision board.

Vision boards have always fascinated me. The only problem is that I’m too lazy to make a physical one.  Getting pictures from old magazines, cutting them up and sticking them on A4 boards has always felt like a lot of work. Well, at least for me. I came across a digital one on Pinterest and immediately decided to learn how to make one. It actually turned out to be super easy than I expected.

Without further ado, let’s dive into the steps that you’re going to take in order to come up with the perfect digital vision board.

Figure Out What You Want To Manifest.

The initial step is to ask yourself what you want to invite into your life, and once you’re sure of what you want the board to be about, you can begin thinking about what will go on it. I, for instance, wanted my vision board to entail financial growth, intentional friendships among other things

Choose An App/Website.

The vision board I saw on Pinterest was made on Canva so I decided to use the same for mine. It’s easy to use and has a variety of board layouts.

Find Content For The Board.

You will pull images and words from the Internet and assemble them digitally. Choose images and quotes that align with your vision. You can also add text with different fonts to make it artsier.

Arrange The Board.

Once you’ve gathered all the content on your desktop,  start arranging the board. The trick is to take your time and have fun while at it. The process of making the vision board will help you to plan your goals and intentions in your head and send them out to the universe. Once you’re done, download it and set it as your phone wallpaper or computer background.

Remember, however small, please ensure that you do something every day that will push you towards the goals you’ve put on your board.

That’s all folks! 😊
