BREAKING: Arsene Wenger Quits

Arsene Wenger leaves Arsenal as a manager after 22 years. The 68 year-old has stunned the football after he announced that he would leave the London club at the end of the season. He penned down an emotional statement to Arsenal supporters on Friday morning. This has happened despite the manager signing a new two year contract less than a year ago after winning the 2016/17 FA Cup.

Arsene Wenger joined the Gunners in 1996 from Nagoya Grampus Eight. He was unknown by then and went to be one of the famous coaches in the world.

“After careful consideration and following discussions with the club, I feel it is the right time for me to step down at the end of the season. I am grateful for having had the privilege to serve the club for so many memorable years. I managed the club with full commitment and integrity.” Arsene Wenger statement.

Wenger in his 22 year spell at Arsenal won three Premier League titles and seven FA Cups. He also led the club to win the league undefeated in the season 2003/04, a record that looks unlikely to be broken. He also brought in some of the biggest signings including Thiery Henry, Patrice Viera, Mesut Ozil and the January signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The Arsenal manager also played a crucial role for Arsenal to move to Emirates Stadium from Highbury Stadium. Emirates Stadium is one of the largest stadium in England with a capacity of 60,000.

Wenger known as the ‘Professor‘ by the Arsenal supporters had fell into a lot of criticism over the recent past demanding him to quit. Arsenal fans have led campaigns asking the manager to quit. This has been seen in the stadium, social media, in the air (use of helicopter) and also on the streets of London. Several memes have been brought up and have gone viral.

The Professor has seen this happen as Arsenal have struggled to clinch the title since 2003/04 season with the invincible group. He has also failed to make big money transfers into the club like other top clubs which the club supporters have not been in terms with. Wenger has also sold top players to rival clubs in the league; Robin Van Persie join Manchester United, Samir Nasri, Gael Clichy, Emmanuel Adebayor, Bacary Sagna have all joined Manchester City, Ashley Cole joined Chelsea where he went to be the best left back in the league and even the world, at the beginning of the season he let Oxlade-Chamberlain joined Liverpool where he has thrived and during the January transfer window Alexis Sanchez left for Manchester United.

Arsenal under Wenger missed this season of the Champions League when they finished fifth in the league after 20 years. They are also likely to miss next seasons Champions League but the can survive if they win the Europa League.

Why has Wenger decided to leave Arsenal? Could it be pressure to deliver or the cry from the fans? That is the big question in the mind of football.

Who is likely to replace Wenger? Speculations of Patrice Viera to Carlo Ancelotti taking charge has been on the media over the last few days, could Arsene Wenger time been predicted?
