The 2018 London Marathon is scheduled for Sunday 22nd April, 2018 in London, England. The race is estimated to have 40,000 participants on the starting line and will be officially started by Her Majesty The Queen where she will step onto a special podium in front of the Round Tower in the grounds of Windsor Castle to push the start button at 10:00 a.m. This will be the third time a member of the royal family has started the race.
The excitement amongst the running community is palpable and not without justification; The elite fields put together by the London Marathon organisation are quite staggering. Kipchoge won’t have it all his own way. There is the man who pushed him so close in Berlin, Guye Adola who is taking part.Others include Kenenisa Bekele, Britain’s home hero Mo Farah; Defending Champion Daniel Wanjiru and Double World Champion Abel Kirui amongst others.
The women race on the other hand invites elites like Kenya’s Mary Keitany, Vivian Cheruiyot, Brigid Kosgei and Gladys Cherono, Bahrain’s Rose Chelimo, and Ethiopia’s Tirunesh Dibaba and Tigist Tufa.
Eliud Kipchoge is the current record holder that he set in 2016 clocking a time of 2 hrs 3 mins 5 secs, this stands to be the shortest time a man has ran at a marathon. Eliud Kipchoge who is also a two time winner at the marathon will be hoping to clinch his third win and to break his record where he has been dubbed the ‘greatest marathon runner of the modern era’. The 2016 Olympic Games marathon champion will be wearing the new Nike FlyPrint shoes which have been created to help the duo run quicker than ever before.
British athletics great Sir Mo Farah admitted Tuesday he faces an uphill task to win Sunday’s London marathon with the likes of two-time winner Eliud Kipchoge and Kenenisa Bekele in the field but says he will fight for a podium place. The 35-year-old, who achieved the Olympic double of 5000 meters and 10000 meters champion twice couldn’t hope for a better send off in his second tilt at his home marathon than for Queen Elizabeth II due to press the start button.
Kenyan veteran Mary Keitany early in the week says her mission is to break the record set by Briton Paula Radcliffe. On April 13, 2003, Radcliffe set a new record of 2 hrs 15 mins 25 seconds and Keitany came close to it last year at a time of 2 hrs 17 mins 01 sec. Keitany is advantaged of lowering Radcliffe’s time as she will be paced by male pacemakers. Keitany faces stiff competition from Ethiopia’s long-distance icon Tirunesh Dibaba, who was second last year, Berlin Marathon champion Gladys Cherono (2:19:25) and Honolulu Marathon winner Brigid Kosgei (2:20:22).
